7 Tips to Successful Learning on the Job

August 11th, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Articles

Learning doesn’t stop after the graduation ceremony. Most of our learning in life happens informally through conversations, stories, actions and mistakes. Have you met people who always seem to know how to find an answer quickly, who to ask for advice and where to go for help? The truth is you can be one of those resourceful people. You just have to become an expert at learning-on-the-job.

Here are 7 keys to the professional development mastery:

1. Build awareness. Don’t be a zombie who operates on autopilot. Be mindful of what is going on around you. There are many things at work that with experience, we can do almost automatically. But in order to learn, we need to pay attention. Get informed about your company, understand its history, the services you provide, markets, processes, culture and politics.

2. Embrace the “TEAM” approach to learning: T = Test your understanding; E = Evaluate the results of your test; A = Assess the strengths and weaknesses of your current position in light of the results; M = Modify your understanding if needed. Repeat the cycle.

“Employee meetings liven up” should be a motto of every company nowadays! What is the purpose of a meeting? To share information, discuss issues, talk about the current situation, brainstorm, and work toward accomplishing a goal. But that’s not what happens at most meetings, well, may be it does but your employees tend to tune out after some time. Because meetings tend to get confusing, have lack of focus, or are boring. Most meetings, if they stick to a well-thought-out agenda, can be finished in well under an hour, and a good facilitator should keep the meeting on track and moving forward.

Boosting Employee Morale | 7 tips for Boosting your Employees morale

July 18th, 2008 3 Comments   Posted in Articles

When you run a business it’s really important for an employee to keep his morale up and boosted all the time. No matter how wonderful the company is, a person who is working for you will eventually get fed up after some months or years. From my personal experience I’d say one can only stick with a company as long as he’s enjoying his work and it’s the Employer’s responsibility to keep a track of everything that’s going on with his company and his employees. Here are a few tips that one can use to boost their employee’s morale and also to make sure that they are satisfied with their work. That will eventually help in future by having the most experienced people with you.

1. Always treat your employees with respect. Sometimes they may be disrespectiful but if you lose your temper and start cursing them in public affects that will be more than just the employee in question.

2. Try to show some interest in your employee’s personal life by knowing enough about your employee to ask about their family/kids as you pass in the hall. Treating them like that always gives them a feeling of worth within the company.

3. Organize “Building Team” activity programs which will allow you to publicly commemorate the efforts of those employees who go beyond the call of duty.

4. Give your employees enough power and ownership of their jobs so that they can make decision when it comes to setting goals/deadlines

5. Acknowledge them by using the terms “please” and “thank you”.

6. Celebrate company successes with all the employees by gathering them in a resturant/coffee place or anything suitable.

7. Set priorities for your employees so that they know what you are expecting from them. This way you can always talk to them about their performances at the end of the month. It will give you a clear view of what they have done for the company

Money is no incentive for a lot of people. It is great to have but gets empty when the basics of just good behavior are taken for granted.
